Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper structures of the muscle and fascia. Deep tissue is a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots. The Therapist will use firm pressure during a deep tissue massage, however it SHOULD NOT be painful. Please notify your knowledgeable Therapist if pain is involved.
Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. Therapist uses a firm but gentle pressure to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation.
Trigger Point Therapy
A trigger point is an unrelaxed muscle fiber that causes a hyper irritable spot or knot that is painful. It is named “trigger point” because it “triggers” a painful response in a certain area of the body when pressed. This is what is called a “referred pain” pattern. A Massage Therapist uses various techniques including deep tissue and stretching to release or deactivate the trigger point.
Sports massage is designed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. Sports massage stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesion’s (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.

During treatment, the client is lying on their side with pillows under the ankles, pelvis and belly, and under the head for comfort. There are many benefits of Massage for the expectant mother; however if you have any concerns, The Wellness Sanctuary recommends you to ask your OB/GYN if Massage is an option for you.
